Changes to Phoenix Road coming soon!

We recently sent out a leaflet to Somers Town residents advising them that the traffic order for the trial changes on Phoenix Road was made on 8th February.

Works are due to start on site from the week of 19th February onwards.

The leaflet includes information about the traffic restrictions for vehicles and maps of alternative routes for travelling in and out of Somers Town by car.

You will hopefully have received a copy of this in the post. You can also access it via the link below:

Routing Leaflet for driving in and out of Somers Town

If you would like to request a printed copy of the leaflet or to request this information in another format (like large print or another language) you can email us at safetravel@camden.gov.ukor call us on 020 7974 4444.

This will mark the beginning of a year-long trial to test out traffic changes and to trial the creation of a new open space in the heart of Somers Town.

Please share this information with your local networks and sign up for project updates.

We look forward to working with you to green Phoenix Road.

Welcome to the updated Greening Phoenix Road site

We are pleased to share a refreshed and updated website ready for the new year and upcoming consultations about trials in Phoenix Road and adjoining streets in 2023.

Following co-design activities and development of an Emerging Plan during 2021, this site was quiet throughout 2022. During this time, Transport planners and Highways Engineers in the project team have been working to develop proposals for traffic changes that will be part of a 12 month trial period in 2023.

Trial of traffic changes

The trial will enable us to test how the changes may impact on people who live, work and study in Somers Town. Community feedback and lessons learned during the trial period will be incorporated into the master plan for greening Phoenix Road and pave the way for permanent changes to traffic.

These traffic changes will enable parts of the road to be converted from carriageway to create green spaces and to begin to transform Phoenix Road into a green link between Euston and St Pancras stations.

Postcards and notices are circulating with details of the proposed changes and how to have your say.

Click here to find information about the proposals and an online survey.

Want to talk to us in person? We'll be at the Sharing space:

Doreen Bazell Hall, 1 Goldington Street, NW1 1UG (on the corner of Goldington Street and Chenies Place).

Pop in any time between 12pm - 3pm on Thursday 16 March or Thursday 23 March.

Somers Town parklets

Two parklets were created and installed in July 2022.

The parklets are part of an 18 month trial to test the impacts of converting parking spaces to green spaces. We worked with local groups to install planters and inject greening and colour into the streetscape. With partners, we built in an added experiment to see what happens when seating is placed in the street and to explore ways that this may be achieved in the wider plans for greening Phoenix Road.

We look forward to sharing proposals and to hearing your feedback.

Thank you

Finally, thank you to everyone who has shared their local knowledge and given feedback to date. There is a wealth of information from your contributions which have, and will continue, to shape the project as it unfolds. These can be found in the Reports and Resources tile.

Please sign up for project updates and continue to share your views and suggestions over the coming year.

We look forward to working with you to green Phoenix Road.

Feedback on the emerging plan - consultation open to 3 October 2021

Thank you to everyone for coming along to join in the activities at the Phoenix Road Play Day and helping to create a festive vibe. It was a wonderful opportunity to see how the plans could work in real life, experiencing playing and socialising in the street free of cars and visualising the space where a new pocket park is proposed.

The ‘milk float’ exhibition of emerging plans was very popular and hundreds of conversations with people keen to share local knowledge with the design team. The emerging plans can be viewed and your feedback is invited via the online survey.

There were many conversations with the Somers Town Space for Us (History Club) about Somers Town’s unique character and ways it can be reflected in the proposed changes to the street. Screen printing of Somers Town’s rich heritage inspired by Gilbert Bayes finials and inspirational quotes was very popular, as well as stencilling of these and other motifs to create colourful Somers Town picnic benches. The two picnic benches will be part of a trial to explore locations for seating and communal tables along Phoenix Road to inform the designs.

The Play Street was a spectacle with Assemble Play and Play in the Park taking over the street with children and families playing and crafting and creating throughout the day. A positive response was that people would like to do it again. Please get in touch if you are interested in organising a Play Street event in Somers Town.

The smoothie bike was as popular as ever, ‘Woven Together’ activities and story sharing, gardening advice and plant give away with Iverde, Somers Town in Bloom awards, and delicious food provided by Zad Café. Teas and coffees were provided by local cafes and many businesses made their toilets available for the day.

It was a collaborative effort of Somers Town volunteers and local organisations and businesses, A Space for Us, Story Garden, Camden officers and LDA Design.

The emerging plans are available to view and comments are invited throughout September 2021.

May Engagement Summary

Youth workshops

We loved working with Global Generation’s Youth Group to develop their ideas. Each session was delivered remotely but using hands-on and creative activities to help bring the young people’s ideas to life. The five sessions were structured around the following:

  • Introduction to the project - setting the brief and meeting the design team
  • Phoenix Road today - site observations, taking photos and generating ideas
  • Biodiversity and nature in the city - what makes a good habitat for wildlife?
  • Develop your idea for Phoenix Road
  • Pitch ideas to the design team - sharing with LDA and Camden Council
  • These workshops aimed to get the young people inspired, as well as supporting them to develop their ideas into practical designs and activities.

Participants chose one of the following three themes to base their ideas around: Nature, Spaces to play and Activities for all. A plethora of ideas for these three areas were developed. We collectively expanded on their initial ideas by asking; Who is the event or structure for? What happens in the space? Why is it important to you? What makes Phoenix Road special? In the final two sessions the children selected ideas and produced drawings and models, which they then presented to the design team in the fifth and final session. We will share more on the ideas gathered at our various co-design sessions next month.

The film above shows an example of an engagement pack we created and used in some of the youth workshops.

What people have told us so far

In addition to the feedback gathered in the co-design sessions, a number of important points and ideas were shared in the Community Stakeholder Workshops. Here is a summary:

  • Attendees were keen to see local involvement and integration of local projects. We have since reached out to a range of local organisations to co-deliver the engagement activities of this project.
  • People suggested they would like to see more grass and trees to replace tarmac. There were also ideas for living walls and creating habitats for wildlife.
  • Locals are keen to see improvement in air quality and there’s desire for local communities to be involved in taking care of new greening.
  • There was discussion around public activities and creative installations with local interest groups.
  • Preservation of local character and heritage was also a strong theme that was discussed.
  • Security was a recurring factor, locals want to disburse anti-social behaviour and to feel safe in public spaces.
  • Traffic and parking were also discussion points, attendees agreed there needs to be a balance between pedestrians, cyclists and access for cars. Residents want to keep parking for residents (livelihoods dependants on cars were brought up), people with disabilities and the church functions.
  • Coming up

We have a series of sessions planned in local schools, which are being co-delivered with Global Generation.

We will continue to capture and record all of the feedback we receive. We will look at all of these contributions and start drawing out some of the main ideas and recurring themes. We will then start compiling a list of possible design ideas and activities, which will be shared via virtual exhibition. Watch this space!

We want to hear from as many people as possible. Add your own ideas for Greening Phoenix Road using the interactive map.

Welcome to the Greening Phoenix Road project

Welcome to the Greening Phoenix Road project

We’re getting real with Greening Phoenix Road and we want you to be a part of it! Greening Phoenix Road will create new green space in Somers Town and a greener link between Euston and St Pancras Stations.

Through an open and collaborative design process, Phoenix Road, Brill Place and adjoining streets will be greener, healthier, safer, and enlivened. A place that puts people first, celebrates local history, culture and built heritage and captures the unique spirit and identity of Somers Town and its community.

There are some exciting opportunities to create and trial ideas as we develop a concept plan for Phoenix Road. Whether you are a resident, business owner, commuter or student, if you use Phoenix Road we would like to hear from you.

You can share your ideas using the online interactive map . If you would like to take part in an upcoming co-design workshop, get in touch at pheonixroad@make-good.com.

    Project Progress

It goes without saying but the past year has been a trying one for our communities. It has been important to keep beneficial community-based initiatives going where possible. Whilst we have experienced slight delays, we have pushed forward to get real with the Greening of Phoenix Road and to ensure this project continues to happen.

This current phase builds on the previous engagement and studies undertaken since 2018. Since December 2020 we have been collecting ideas through a combination of co-design workshops and online engagement and putting them into the mix of possible things that could happen on Phoenix Road.

    What happens next?
  • We will look at all of these contributions and draw out the main ideas and similarities between ideas. Then we can start making a list of possible designs and activities to trial over the summer and/or feed into the developing concept plan for Phoenix Road.
  • We want to bring all the stakeholders together to help evaluate and prioritise ideas to test out and take forward. If you have signed up to the project updates you will be invited to this alongside lots of other local organisations.
  • After this we will identify pilots or tests from the prioritised list. We will look to the community to help us design, build or contribute to making real. Using these tests, we will gather feedback from the local people.
  • We will bring the stakeholders together again to help prioritise ideas to take forward based on the feedback we have received from the tests.
  • We will then exhibit the final ideas, along with your feedback and we will set out the next steps.
  • The findings from this will also be reflected in the longer-term plans for Phoenix Road, which are being developed alongside the process outlined above.
  • If you would like to take part in an upcoming co-design workshop, get in touch at pheonixroad@make-good.com or get involved by sharing your ideas using the online interactive map . Sign up to monthly email updates by entering your email address above.
